Sonia supports Texas health centers with outreach and enrollment efforts and developing/assessing their infrastructure. She provides technical assistance, training and support to health center Outreach and Enrollment staff who are trained as Certified Application Counselors and/or Your Texas Benefits Navigators. Sonia and her staff help health centers meet reporting requirements under their HRSA Outreach & Enrollment grants. Sonia also serves as the designated Special Populations point of contact and assesses training and technical support needs for health centers serving populations such as migratory/seasonal agricultural workers (MSAWs), residents of public housing, the homeless as well as Veterans, the LGBTQ community, the elderly and other vulnerable populations. As the former Regional Migrant Health Coordinator for the South Midwest region, which includes, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, Sonia through her Special Populations role continues to provide technical assistance and coordinate resources to help existing Migrant Health centers establish or strengthen health programs that serve MSAWs in these states. Sonia also handles the Out-stationed Eligibility Worker Program for TACHC and works with the state Medicaid agency to place Medicaid eligibility workers at Texas health centers as well as assess the program’s impact. Sonia and her team are responsible for the maintenance of the My Texas My Health™ campaign website and she has oversight of the Community Partner Program grant, an initiative to recruit Community Partners across the state that will use YourTexasBenefits.com to assist consumers with their application for public benefits. Originally from El Paso Texas, Sonia earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso. Prior to joining TACHC in 2002, Sonia worked at the State Capitol and was Chief of Staff/Legislative Director for two State Representatives.
